The school counseling program at QLMS is aligned with the school's mission to support the Social/Emotional, Academic, and Career needs of all students.  These needs are addressed in the following ways:

Group Counseling
During the year, various group counseling programs are offered to students at all grade levels. Such topics as: dealing with Changing Families, Stress/Anger Management, and Friendship are especially popular. Students in these groups generally meet once a week for a certain period of time to gain some insight and learn skills that will help them throughout life. 

Individual Counseling
Students encounter various problems that can affect their educational experience.  Counselors are here to help students with social/emotional issues to include personal crisis as well as academic counseling.

Classroom Counseling Lessons 
Classroom presentations are held on various issues, such as bullying, learning to use peer mediation and other peaceful means of resolving conflict, managing stress and anger, getting along with peers, and career exploration.  

School counselors work with students, parents, and teachers to identify and remove barriers to learning.  They coordinate referrals to outside resources as needed for additional help.  They help parents, teachers, and administrators in learning how to meet the needs of all students.


Information students share with the school counselor is confidential.  Students' right to privacy is guarded as much as permitted by law, ethics, and school policy.  The school counselor is obligated to break confidentiality when there is potential harm to the student or others, concern of neglect or abuse, or a court of law that requires testimony or student records.  At times, the counselor and school-based staff (teacher, social worker, principal, etc.) will need to exchange information about a student (how they are coping in class, sharing strategies, etc.).  All communication will take place only on a need-to-know basis.
